When is the best time to prune trees in the Kansas City area?
For most shade trees, late winter while the tree is dormant — the structure is easy to see and the cuts seal quickly once spring growth starts. Oaks are the exception: to reduce the risk of oak wilt, avoid pruning them from spring through mid-summer unless a limb is damaged or hazardous. Dead or broken limbs can be removed any time of year.
What's the difference between trimming and pruning?
People use the words interchangeably, and that's fine. When we say trimming we usually mean shaping for appearance and clearance; pruning means selective cuts made for the tree's health and structure — removing dead, diseased, crossing, or poorly attached limbs. Most jobs involve some of both.
Can you trim shrubs and hedges, or only trees?
Both. We shape hedge lines, cut back overgrown foundation shrubs and ornamentals, and remove dead or unwanted shrubs. If a crew is already on site for your trees, having the shrubs done in the same visit is the easiest way to get it all handled.
Do you top trees?
Topping — cutting the main limbs back to stubs — is something we steer customers away from. It weakens the tree, invites decay, and produces a burst of weak, fast-growing shoots that make the problem worse. If a tree is genuinely too big for its spot, a proper crown reduction or a removal is the better answer, and we'll walk you through both.
